Haircare 911— How to Treat a Sunburn Scalp and Protect Your Hair this Summer!

With Summer in full swing, no doubt everyone’s immersed in Vitamin D sitting by the pool, on outdoor hikes, on your kid’s sporting fields, or the beach. Chances are you’re outside every opportunity you can get. We all know those warm rays hitting our faces are not our friends.

If the sun is hitting your face, and you are not wearing protective headwear, it’s also hitting your scalp. Just like any skin on your body, your scalp can get sunburned. Worse, we expose our hair to excessive sun damage, which may lead to dry, weak, and brittle hair. As a result, the protective oils and cellular systems become compromised, which may trigger the production of a superoxide combination, increasing the chances of hair loss due to signals influencing follicles to switch from growth to shedding.

Gabie G from Hair By Gabie G, Cupertino, Ca. Suggests taking a proactive stance on sun damage and committing yourself to use the proper amount of protection. Our best line of defense is a good hat; the bigger, the better. If hats or umbrellas aren’t for you in the summer, invest in an excellent sunblock spray that will be easy to massage your scalp. The American Academy of Dermatology suggests using a leave-in conditioner that contains zinc oxide.

We finish our regime with Davines SU Hair Milk Spray, a leave-on softening milk enriched with UV protective filters that protect cosmetic color and hydration during sun exposure. It keeps the hair soft and light.

How to Find Comfort If You Get a Scalp Burn

  • Shower in excellent — or at most tepid — water. Hot water will increase sunburn discomfort.

  • Dry your hair naturally. The heat from blow dryers and heat tools can also dry and damage your healing scalp.

  • Check the label on your shampoo and conditioner. During healing, avoid sulfate products; they can dry the scalp and create more irritation. Also, prevent conditioners with dimethicone; it can block pores, trap heat, and create more damage.

  • Ease discomfort with cold compresses and moisturize.

  • Massaging coconut oil and aloe vera gel gently into the sunburned area may relieve pain and promote healing. Keep in mind that they’ll both make your hair look oiled. Many supporters of natural healing suggest calming sunburn with essential oils such as helichrysum or lavender. Helichrysum is a favorite for ouies in our home.

  • Stay hydrated and drink clean water containing electrolytes and those without food dyes.

  • While your scalp is healing, stay out of the sun or keep your scalp covered.

  • Although some people naturally have tender scalps, you should consult your doctor if your symptoms persist, including extreme pain, high fever, persistent headache, confusion, and nausea.

This summer, be good to yourself and your hair!
